I want to prevent a race into unmonitorability kicked off by confused reporting. The depth of the computation graph for our present frontier models, including Astra, is within a factor of two of GPT-4. OpenAI has worked to preserve and utilize chain-of-thought monitoring since our very first reasoning models. We deeply care about this technique, as it can give us a view into how model alignment generalizes from its training distribution. I do think it is fragile and unfortunately trending in a negative direction, for reasons not contingent on architecture changes that I will write about soon. But there are things we can do to strengthen it, and it's a core goal of our current research program.

A great morning at the Codex Community Meetup in Chiang Mai! We started with the latest Codex updates, explored how ChatGPT Work and Codex can complement each other, and walked through practical use cases and simple demos. Here’s the thing: Non-technical users might be surprised by this: ChatGPT can’t actually see your website the way you do. It hits your page like a tourist who doesn’t speak the language. Sounds dumb but it takes a screenshot. Guesses which button means “checkout.” Clicks, waits, screenshots again. Rename a button and the whole thing breaks, because it was never reading your site, it was reverse-engineering it. That’s a real problem now, not a hypothetical one. Why? Because ChatGPT passed 1 billion weekly active users (WAU) in August 2026, up from 400 million in early 2025. A third of consumers already start searches with an AI tool instead of Google. WebMCP fixes this underlying broken mechanism. A WebMCP-enabled site is designed to explicitly tell the browser what it can do (searchProducts, bookFlight) and what inputs each tool needs. No screenshots, no guessing. Same difference as scraping a bank’s site versus calling its API. This is why we’re excited at @Netlify to team up with @OpenAIDevs on the WebMCP Challenge. Our take on AX is simple: Agents should be first-class citizens on the web, not something sites barely tolerate. We’d love to see more products built or transformed to be agent-native. If you’re curious to explore WebMCP, this challenge is a great head start.

During this codex reset token burn, I maxed out the machine capacity of my 128 GB mac, my 36 GB mac, and my 32GB Windows. All connected via @orca_build's remote host feature. Although I did have more computers on the way, I prob should use more cloud VMs to handle this kind of spiky workload. Luckily Orca already supports connecting to on-demand VMs. Let me know which VM provider I should use 👀

The whole “20x” in Claude’s pricing is so misleading. The $100 plan says 5x Pro limits, while the $200 plan says 20x Pro limits. That makes it sound like you’re getting 4x the usage. But the 20x applies only to the 5-hour usage window. The weekly limit is basically just 2x the $100 plan. I spent way too much time digging through the internet and Reddit to figure this out. They could’ve just stated the limits directly instead of marketing it as “20x.” That alone would’ve saved me hours of confusion.

Last week, I pushed a change to the ChatGPT desktop app that makes the loading of threads faster. Not just a little faster. A LOT faster. ✅ Long threads now load over 90% faster. ✅ Decreased the memory footprint of long threads by over 90%.

GitHub plugin syncing is now available for ChatGPT workspaces, including Business and Enterprise. Admins can import a Codex or Claude marketplace from a public or private repo and share its plugins with their team. The workspace picks up changes daily, or sooner with Sync now, so there’s no need to upload a ZIP for every update. Existing installation and app-access controls still apply. If you use a personal account, you can already add plugin repos in the desktop app. Workspace admins can get started under Workspace settings → Plugins → Add → Import marketplace.

In my ~14 months at @OpenAI, one of the most surprising and genuinely wonderful things about it, has been the full leadership support for full-duplex models (gpt-live series), even when it seemed deeply improbable that they would work. And yet, if they did work, it was obvious how magical they could be. I am quite sure this is not an exception but a general rule for research projects at @OpenAI. There were so many moments when the problem felt impossibly hard. But one thing kept being true: it was never clear why it shouldn’t work. And almost every time we understood the problem a little better, it became a little easier to solve. I’m pretty sure there are very few environments in the world where a bet like this could have been made and sustained. So grateful to be part of this wonderful place.

Scaling exploration monotonically improves existing models across images/video/language, and unlocks end-to-end generation. In the simplest case, it's just a for loop. Today is my last day at @OpenAI. I'm glad to have spent the last eight months of my life working here! I'm starting a new company focused on the production of high-quality reinforcement learning datasets: 1. The generalization ability of LLMs is clearly very poor, with "spiky" capabilities even in areas that have received tremendous amounts of investment and attention. For example, despite multiple years with tens (if not hundreds) of billions invested, even coding capabilities don't demonstrate "generality" -- even if every model can solve Codeforces questions or port C++ to Rust better than I can, I still have to manually "deslop" pull requests. 2. The vast majority of economically productive capabilities are not well represented in existing data offerings. First, there's a certain art to the design of an RL dataset which most vendors, not having upstreamed data into large training runs themselves, don't really understand. Second, and more importantly, most work is highly contextual and not easily encoded into a gradable environment; even if we can observe a "golden path" taken by a human which we believe to be good, it's challenging to understand whether alternate, counterfactual paths produce good or bad outcomes. The basic premise here is that I have a clear understanding of what labs need/want, having explicitly been on the other side and having been involved at every level from procurement all the way through training, and I'm able to provide it. I also believe that data needs will grow tremendously in the coming years, especially as frontier labs face increasing pressure toward profitability, and that they won't get the relevant capabilities "for free" through scaling alone; instead, they'll need to spend >$100B on precise, well-targeted data acquisition. Our first products will be focused on biology and statistical reasoning: 1. First, datasets that address long-horizon scientific reasoning, drawing on my work on GeneBench-Pro with @jeremyli__. Frontier models are still unable to reliably execute "messy" data analyses that require judgment, exploration, and adaptive revision (GB-Pro passrate on GPT-5.6 Sol scarcely exceeds 30%); to address this, we have the ability to generate thousands of high-quality problems with known ground truths which can be reliably graded. (In contrast, most existing RL data for bioinformatics is either massively over- or under-specified, and will probably break your model when you train on it.) Moving the "reliability gap" from 30% to >90% is obviously required for scientific acceleration, and -- despite my skepticism about generalization of RL -- is one of the *most promising datasets* conceivable when it comes to yielding generalization benefits for models' overall reasoning capabilities. 2. Second, datasets that address capabilities relevant to day-to-day workflows. Imagine a scientist snapping a picture of some experimental process or result -- say, a cell culture plate or a Western blot -- and asking Claude a question. Frontier models remain quite bad at these questions, especially those with multimodal components. But they're obviously required for acceleration of scientific discovery; before we can dream about automating science, we have to begin with shoring up these basic, generalist capabilities. Beyond these two, we hope to expand to adjacent fields (chemistry, materials science, etc.), and then even further into fields with more direct economic applicability like healthcare and white-collar office work. I strongly encourage labs with data needs to reach out. We offer industry-standard pricing and terms, and like I said -- I know how this process works, what good data looks like, and how to demonstrate to you, convincingly, that you'll be able to upstream our data into your training processes without issue. More puzzles and more explanations. So now we know two models can apparently do the result. We are still looking for the initial insight but this post is actually showing a lot of "why" and "how". Pretty cool, now I find it more and more that the Jacobian conjecture for n>=3 was not a wise conjecture. We are silly as humans and in algebra we have a long story of silly assumptions turning into really new theories. We learned a long time ago that most polynomials starting from degree 5 onwards are not solvable by radicals. We have learned that a list of finite simple groups is nicely enumerable with a few monsters. Integral Hodge conjecture is false. Maybe Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer and Hodge are also false. Ranks of elliptic curves might be unbounded, etc. So many brilliant questions that might reveal our naive understanding of the world. I think we are living in fascinating times. And everybody seems to be joining the party!
